Summer Talks: Teaching Kids About Money and Wealth

June 17, 2025

Talking to Your Kids About Wealth This Summer
(And Why There’s No Better Time to Start)

Summer in Mount Pleasant brings sunshine, slower schedules, and more time together as a family—making it a perfect opportunity to start a meaningful (and often overdue) conversation: how to talk to your children or grandchildren about wealth, values, and inheritance.

At Cross Roads Investment Management, we believe financial stewardship starts at home. Too many families wait until it’s too late to have these conversations—leading to confusion, conflict, or poor financial decisions. By opening the door early and keeping the conversation ongoing, you’re helping prepare the next generation to manage wealth with wisdom and purpose.

Why It Matters
Talking about money doesn’t mean giving up privacy or control. It’s about helping your family understand:

  • The responsibilities that come with wealth

  • The values guiding your financial decisions

  • The plan in place to protect and grow your family’s resources

  • Their future role as stewards of your legacy

When to Begin
Sooner is better. Kids of all ages can begin engaging with money topics in age-appropriate ways—from saving and giving to investing and planning. Summer creates natural moments—on a walk, during a trip, or at a family dinner—for these discussions to happen organically.

Conversation Starters
Try these questions based on age:

Younger Kids or Teens

  • What do you think it means to be “smart with money”?

  • If you had $1,000 to save, spend, and give—how would you use it?

  • What do you think our family values most?

Adult Children

  • What does financial independence mean to you?

  • Would you want to know how our estate plan or trust is structured—and why?

Keep It Productive

  • Focus on values, not numbers

  • Make it a two-way conversation

  • Reinforce that wealth is a tool, not an identity

  • Consider a family meeting—with help from your Cross Roads advisor

Legacy Is More Than Money
These conversations are about building trust, passing on values, and preparing your loved ones for the road ahead. If you'd like help structuring these conversations or reviewing your legacy plan, the Cross Roads Investment Management team is here for you.
